SOUND CHECK: Patoranking (NIGERIA)
Patoranking’s belief that his music conveys more than just a fun beat, but a message to get his audience thinking and acting for the greater good.
The Roots
26 year old artist, Patoranking grew up in Lagos Nigeria. Born Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, and later dubbed Patoranking by a Jamaican artist in Alpha Beach in his hometown of Lagos, he started his musical career as an underground artist collaborating with the likes of XProject, Konga, Slam, and Reggie Rockstone. Patoranking has been releasing singles regularly since 2010, while being signed to different labels and working on developing his own unique sound. “Alubarika” and “Girlie O” are the two songs that worked as a catalyst in the beginning of his musical career. In 2015, he announced that he signed a deal with VP records and in August 2016 he released his debut album, God Over Everything. His main focus as he puts it is mind-conscious Dancehall.
Patoranking has stayed very busy since then with a number of singles like the big one ‘Love You Die’ featuring Diamond Platnumz in 2017, ‘Suh Different’ in 2018 and ‘Confirm’ alongside the powerhouse Davido in 2019.
The Musical Influence
Patoranking’s style can be traced back to a diverse pool of Reggae and Dancehall artists that span the globe. From Jamaican greats like Buju Banton and Bob Marley to Nigeria’s Fela Kuti and Majek Fashek. In his music you clearly feel the fusion of the two cultures.
The Sound
The video for “Girlie O” starts off as a modern love song with contagious Dancehall beats. Patoranking tries to help the woman in the video who is in an abusive relationship with her current boyfriend. He sings
“Yah Baby, done know say me love you so much. Wah take you everyday to me church. Me love you from the bottom of me heart. From the end to the start”
But as the video progresses, we see the woman stays with her abusive boyfriend and Patoranking turns away, leaving alone. The video ends with a message “Abusers choose to abuse. Don’t suffer in silence. You are not to blame. STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.” A towering reflection of Patoranking’s belief that his music conveys more than just a fun beat, but a message to get his audience thinking and acting for the greater good.
‘Money’ is a single off of his debut album. If the title doesn’t tell you everything, then the video will. Patoranking can be seen flaunting his new success…with all his new money.
