SOUND CHECK: Slightly Stoopid (United States)
With over 20 years experience in the game, Slightly Stoopid continues to inspire youth to question authority, rise up to better the world, and continue to live through life’s hardships
The Roots
The world famous Slightly Stoopid began with childhood friends, Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald, along with their high school friend, Adam Bausch. The group formed in 1994 in Ocean Beach, California. Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell discovered them and quickly signed them to his label Skunk Records.
Their debut album Slightly Stoopid came out in 1996. Forming a blend of roots, rock, blues, reggae, punk, hip hop, and funk, the group quickly revolutionized the way people listened to music. By 1998, they released The Longest Barrel Ride, which continued to focus on their innovative sound. Everything You Need in 2003, released on Surfdog Records, was the band’s third studio album. Closer to the Sun came in 2005 and gave the band a more psychedelic rock sound. Released in 2007 on Stoopid Records, Chronchitis contained collaborations with artists such as Angelo Moore, Fishbone, G Love, and Guru from Gang Starr. Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid was released in 2008. This album was comprised of original songs as well as covers, outtakes, and re-recordings of past songs.
After a short break, Top of the World came out in 2012. This album contained a variety of sounds and styles blended together to create the epic Slightly Stoopid sound. It featured collaborations from some of their influencers, such as Barrington Levy and Don Carlos of Black Uhuru. Meanwhile…Back at the Lab was released in 2015. The band’s eighth studio album stayed true to their reggae, punk, hip hop, funk, blues, roots, fusion sound. Though they had toured for over a decade, on and off, the band still found time to create new music with their organic sound. With over 20 years experience in the game, Slightly Stoopid continues to inspire youth to question authority, rise up to better the world, and continue to live through life’s hardships.
The Musical Influence
Slightly Stoopid, having formed their own fusion of sounds, are still to this day influenced by: Led Zeppelin, Sly & Robbie, Dr. Dre, Bob Marley, Nirvana, Sublime, UB40, The Police, Yellowman, Don Carlos, Cymande, The Meters, Miles Davis, NWA, and The Beastie Boys. Quite an eclectic mix of heavy weights that helped shape Slightly Stoopid from the beginning.
The Sound
Their genuine sound is unchangeable and inimitable. Their romantic, happy-go-lucky “Don’t Stop” matches their vibe and sound.
They sing:
“You gotta smile that lights up my life and I won’t let go
I see the moon and the stars in your eyes and I’m wantin’ you to know
It’s been some time you’ve been in my life since the day we’ve met
I think of you and the times that we’ve had I will never forget”
Recognized for their live performances and their presence on stage, it’s no secret why Slightly Stoopid has been able to withstand the ups and downs of the music industry with undying support from their fans for over 20 years. This 2015 performance of their hit “Underneath the Pressure,” shows the band’s crisp live sound and ska bonafides.
