In her song with Notis feat. Kabaka Pyramid, “Generations Will Rize,” she touches on the need for the youth to embrace the fight for equality and justice for all in the never-ending quest of others to deny us of our freedom.

The Roots

Australian-born Natalie Magdalena Chilcote now known as Nattali Rize claims she is from everywhere, with Native American, Samoan, Basque and Mexican blood pumping through her veins. Her musical career began in a small beach town in New South Wales called Byron Bay. She began as a percussionist in a local band, Skin. Later she formed part of the internationally acclaimed roots band, Blue King Brown, under the name Natalie Pa’apa’a. Blue King Brown released three albums from 2006 to 2014, the last of which was partly produced by Sly and Robbie at the famous Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston. At this point, she adopted the stage name Nattali Rize and broke free to pursue a solo career. Nattali Rize is using her musical career to elevate consciousness and inspire her fans to make a difference, and “Rize” up.

The Musical Influence

As a girl, she was exposed to different artists with many becoming her musical mentors: Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Fela Kuti, Louis Armstrong, Santana, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and (of course) Bob Marley. Now, as Nattali Rize, these influencers are evident in her musicality.

The Sound

In her song with Notis feat. Kabaka Pyramid, “Generations Will Rize,” she touches on the need for the youth to embrace the fight for equality and justice for all in the never-ending quest of others to deny us of our freedom.

“And the youth them see so they’re breaking free from your mental slavery. Generations Will Rize, governments they will fall, we’re the only ones who will carry us through it all.”

Still, Rize manages to hit a nice balance through her song “Rebel Love” with Notis feat. Zuggu Dan; creating fun and flirty lines such as, “Now mi need you when mi wake up in the morning,” and “[I’m] a soul rebel, a rebel in love.”
